The issue

Society in the UK is changing rapidly. Over the last 25 years or so major socio-economic pressures have resulted in a radical shift

in working and living conditions. People now live longer so that the population contains a higher proportion of older people.

Many people live in poverty and deprivation. Inequalities have widened almost exponentially. Improved lifestyles and greater wealth

are enjoyed by some while social exclusion and poverty is experienced by many.

At the heart of this debate is the question of age - in employment, education, health and social care, benefits, pensions and taxation.

There is increasing evidence of discrimination - rationing in some instances - at all ages in many aspects of life as people and organisations

respond to pressures. Age is not a criterion of worth. Thus decisions based on age - too young, too old, not young or old enough,

too experienced, not experienced enough, too old or too young to benefit, worth or not worth spending on - are inherently unreliable.
